Old english, gothic and fraktur tattoo fonts
Old english (textura), fraktur and modern gothic share the broken curves and heavy verticals that make blackletter unmistakable. The in-house faces here push it further: thorn-spiked gothic, blackletter grown from a crescent moon or a dagger, altdeutsche Schrift with flourishes.
Blackletter is the most durable lettering style, because every stroke is thick. It is also the hardest to read, so two or three words is the honest limit; a full sentence turns into texture. Give capitals room, avoid all-caps blackletter (it was never designed for it), and use size generously.
Free for your tattoo, personal or commercial
Every font on this page is free to use for the lettering you take to a studio, and the exported PNG and SVG are yours. The open-licensed classics need nothing from you. For the AI Tattoos originals, we ask one thing when the lettering is used commercially (a shop, merchandise, a client project): a credit that names ai-tattoos.com. Personal tattoos need no credit at all.
What we do not do is hand out font files. The page renders your text and exports images of it; the typefaces themselves stay here, which is what keeps the classics inside their licences and the originals unique.
How to choose a tattoo font
Start with the word, not the font. Type the actual text you want, at roughly the length it will be, and read it in the list at a size that matches the placement you have in mind. A font that looks great as "A" can fall apart as "Alexandra". The list fades long text at the edge on purpose: if your quote does not fit at preview size, it will not fit on a wrist either.
Then think in strokes. Heavy faces (traditional, blackletter, tribal, blackwork) survive decades and read across a room. Fine line and delicate script look best fresh and need size to stay legible. Scripts and cursive follow curved placements like the forearm and collarbone well; block capitals suit flat, wide areas like the upper arm, back and chest. When you have two or three candidates, open them in the generator and look at them on the on-body preview before you decide.

Frequently asked questions
Are these tattoo fonts really free for commercial use?
Yes. The open-licensed classics (SIL Open Font License and Apache 2.0) are free for any use. The AI Tattoos originals are free for personal and commercial use, with one condition for commercial use: credit ai-tattoos.com. A personal tattoo needs no credit.
Can I download the font file?
No, and that is deliberate. You download your lettering as a transparent PNG or a vector SVG, which is what an artist needs for a stencil. The font files themselves are not distributed.
What makes the in-house fonts unique?
Each one was generated from a single piece of tattoo art, drawn into a complete alphabet in that style, and traced into a typeface here. They do not exist in any font archive. New ones are added as the collection grows.
Do the fonts support umlauts and accents?
The classics do (ä, ö, ü, ß, é and the rest). The in-house originals currently cover A to Z, a to z, digits and basic punctuation; accented characters are next on the list.
Which tattoo font is best for a name?
For most names, a script or cursive with clear letterforms: type the name in the list and pick the one where every letter is still obvious at a glance. If the name is short, blackletter and traditional block capitals also work well. Avoid fine line for anything under about 5 mm letter height.
